Issue 109    Issue 109

I want thank Aral Dite and Jason for submitting these with special thanks to Jason for purchasing a collection on eBay to supplement the first 57 issues of Aral's. They've added something a little different to the site with these and I'm personally really happy reading these as they make a nice counter to the heavier tome that is Automobile Year. I will add a supplemantary Index that came with the last issue soon. Not a biggie but still nice to have.

Ten issues have been added to the download area. Head on over to grab issues 210 thru 219 for some weekend reading!!

Issue 109

New Feature

I've had a few requests from people wanting to know what the site offers for their donation contributions so I have added a Content Index on the site. Note: This is NOT an exhaustive list. Rather it currently details a selection of titles for the consoles along with an indication of the number of issues available for download and I will add a selection of computer and multi-format titles to the list in the next few days as well so visitors can assess whether the content makes it  worth donating for access or not.

Why am I doing this when I am potentially closing the site in a few months?

"Potentially" is the operative word here. Part of the reason is because of the lack of people willing to sign on to assist the site. Due to the vagaries of the download manager I cannot make directories available for visitors without allowing downloads so as a visitor you have no way of seeing what is available other than by trawling through the News pages. By highlighting the majour content on the Content Index this allows you to get a view of what is available for members. As always, there may be room for improvement so by all means let me know by commenting in the post and I'll see if I can make things better if appropriate.

Thanks once again to sunpig issue 43 is now crossed off the to-do list.

Issue 109

If you look at the logo you can see the lines I have been unable to remove from my scans and which are doing my head in .....  :-(

Edge (UK)

Another issue is now available in the form of issue 57. Once again, thanks to sunpig for providing the physical copy for scanning.

Issue 109

UPDATE: I've added placeholders for the seven remaining issues I have received from sunpig along with the three issues that we do not have. Once I have scanned the seven we are only missing those three issues from having a complete collection from 1 - 323 archived. Good news there is a chance one of our members may be in a position to scan those missing issues for us too!!!  :-)

Edge (UK)

Thanks to sunpig we now have issue 45 available for download.

Issue 109

This issue is the first of two with a look at emulation of older computers/consoles on the PC.

Countdown to Site Closure ....

The last couple of days have been quiet on the scanning front for me as I work through my thoughts around running the site versus the things I am missing out on due to the amount of time spent scanning, editing and generally keeping the site up and running. The site has been a source of delight intermingled with times of frustration for five years now.

The experiment of turning it into a closed community has been, on the whole, a bit of a failure really!! I thought by closing the site to freeloaders, it would generate a forum of users dedicated to uplifting the site by contributing to scanning, discussion etc. While there have been instances of active support through donating mags (sunpigMarkGunyan Tony and J.Cameron) most have simply donated to access content so the forum like participation has not eventuated how I thought it would. Donating $1.00 to get access isn't going to assist the site in any meaningful way I am afraid. I don't know why anyone would think that donation level would help yet plenty of you clearly think that is the case. If ten thousand people had signed up that would certainly be different but not with the member levels currently (72).

Currently all of my scanners are secondhand and all have problems (scratched glass, dirty optics) and I cannot get them fixed in New Zealand due to shoddy business practises by local support companies who will only fix scanners purchased from themselves. I've done what I can to try and keep them running and I cannot do any more so the current output is the best I can get without purchasing new scanning equipment. At $900 minimum for a new IX500 A4 scanner through to $5500 for a replacement A3 scanner I simply am not in a position to be able to purchase new equipment.

After considering all of this I have decided to bring it to an end. What will happen in the next couple of months? I intend to scan and release ALL magazines donated to me ... EdgeComputer GamesDreamcast Official (Japan) .... and anything else sent to me by people for scanning. Any scans submitted by Jason and any other scanning members will be put online as usual. In the new year on a date to be determined I will close the site down. Anything still to be scanned at the date of closure from members will still be scanned and I will notify the donator of the appropriate Mediafire links as I get them finished so they will have digital versions of their mags... all of them!!! After that I will get on with a life outside of scanning and who knows, maybe I will continue to scan the odd mag and put it online at somewhere like.... heaven forbid .... archive.org!!! Maybe.....

APC (Australian PC)

Thanks to Aral Dite we now have the March and May 2008 issues online.

Given this title has been discontinued by Future and their app no longer allows people to download purchased issues I have uploaded 10 issues which are now available in the download area for those interested in PlayStation reading

Issue 109

Wonder Book of Navy

Next off my bookshelf of the weird and wonderful is this mid to late 1950's title. I have to say, the British battleships like HMS Vanguard were so sleek compared to their US counterparts.

Another of sunpig's donated mags gets the scanning treatment. Issue 44 makes an appearance in the download pool  :-)

Thanks to sunpig we now have issue 37 preserved and ready to download!!!

Issue 109

Game Informer (AUS)

Jason and I (mainly Jason) have been scanning issues of the Australian version for a while now and I have decided to make issues up to 2012 inclusive available given many of the USA versions are available on Archive.org. As a result of this six issues are now available in the download area.

Issue 109

Mediafire ...

WIth my current Pro account rapidly dwindling to no space left I bit the bullet and purchased a separate Pro account to be able to continue to provide members with ad-free direct downloads. I am currently uploading Games tm issues for release next month when Future take the app store offline along with getting Game Informer (AUS) issues uploaded for imminent release. I will look at rationalising the storage between the two accounts so it doesn't do my head in so expect a little disruption as links for some magazines may go down while I get new links populated.

On Four Wheels

Jason drops in the remaining issues in the 80's (82 - 89) for us to enjoy.
