Next up we have issue 81 of this weekly thanks to Jason.
Next up we have issue 81 of this weekly thanks to Jason.
Thanks to donator sunpig we now have issue 130 added to our evergrowing collection. Excellente!!
Something wildly different today with J.Cameron providing us with Vol. 40 issue 02 of this monthly aircraft magazine. This issue has a nice article on the Curtiss Helldiver, the successor but not the equal of the Dauntless SBD, to this day still one of my favorite aircraft. I believe they have an SBD still lying Stateside. Man, I'd love to take a flight in that. Awesome!!!
Work continues at speed to get these archived. Even with the crappy iPhone 3G's miserable storage I have managed to get a lot of issues ripped and decrypted to the extent I am now only 30 issues or so away from having all digital issues between 220 - 320 archived and their covers added to the site. I am hoping to have the 30 issues archived in the next day or two then it's back to scanning Edge / CG:SP magazines and everything else in my collection.
Hopefully I will have the new scanner up and running in the next week as well. Looking forward to seeing how that goes. Fingers crossed....
I am still looking at purchasing a first gen iPad to get digital issues of Future's titles archived off quicker than the iPhone allows me to. The only problem with this is that the old 32bit iPad only goes to iOS 5.5 and although I can get 32bit apps for their titles like PlayStation Official, Edge, Xbox Official, PC Format etc they never released 32bit apps for Retro Gamer or Games tm as they only acquired Imagine's assets 18 months ago. I have already tried these on the iPhone to no avail so that's a dead end I am afraid. If anyone can provide me with a 64bit jailbroken iPad however, I will personally purchase the complete digital collections with a view to getting proper PDF's of these rather than screengrabbed images but I fear time is running out for Games tm so we may have to just be happy with screen grabbed issues.
I cannot keep up with Jason's output lately but while I am trying to get GamesMaster preserved before their cut-off I've nonetheless uploaded no less than TEN new scans of his to try and stay in touch. You can now grab issues 71 through 80 from the usual place. :-)
Given the unknown whether Future pulls the app for these after the last issue is released next month I decided to forego scanning magazines for a day or two and concentrate on getting the issues I have paid for of this title downloaded onto my really old iphone and decrypted/ripped into true PDF files. The result is that so far issues 220 - 244 253 have now been archived and their covers added to the site. More issues are incoming although I am currently limited by the speed of my crappy old iphone 3G due to the small memory on the device.
If I can source a cheap original iPad 16/32GB using an older iOS version I will have a crack at jailbreaking that to get faster downloads so that we don't have to worry about Future's potential cut-off dates.
Andynick gave me a heads up that Future PLC discontinued this title a couple of months ago so I had a look at their iTunes app to see about downloading the complete digital set only to find that they had taken eveything down. If you had the issues and your iPad needs a reset you are essentially screwed as you cannot restore them unless I'm guessing you made a total backup of your iPad beforehand. This may be due to the fact that this title was an Imagine acquisition as they have kept back issues available for PC Format however it bodes ill for Games tm back issues. The same thing happened with their discontinued Xbox titles and Nintendo Official Magazine.
In light of this disturbing trend of theirs to happily take peoples money and fail to provide adequate means of retaining the items you purchased in good faith I will look at making ALL issues of Games tm available here at such time as they fail to provide people with acceptable service. Goodness knows what will happen with GamesMaster but I really hope it follows the PC Format model rather than the shoddy one for Play tm
Hot on the heels is issue 169 of the other soon to be deceased magazine thanks to slider1983.
I thought I might as well scan issue 54 seeing as the magazines closure is imminent.
Aso coming online are another 28 or so issues scanned by Andynick and Jason which used to be available but were not reuploaded after migrating the site from WordPress to Joomla. Truth be told I forgot about them so the recent announcements have given me an incentive to sort it out. Expect to see them over the weekend all going well.
** UPDATE ** All issues that have been scanned prior to issue 84 are now online. If you have any physical issues not available here and want to donate them in the interests of preservation leave a comment and I will get in touch with you. If you aren't a member and you donate physical issues you will be given access to the site.
As you can tell from a couple of comments recently Future PLC have pulled the plug on these two titles with the November issues being their last. While I can understand Games tm being cancelled as it was acquired from the purchase of Imagine a year ago and was in competition to GamesMaster and Edge it is hard to reconcile the loss of GamesMaster as it was the lighter/ breezier alternative to the fairly staid Edge.
That leaves just Edge and Game Informer in the multi-format arena along with the retro oriented Retro Gamer. Sad times indeed.
As a result of this decision it does mean these two magazines now fall into the defunct category. Depending on what happens with the availability of digital issues I may make changes in regards to what can be made available for both of these titles. At the very least issues 1 - 83 of Games tm continue to be required for preservation with many issues yet to have decent scans, or any at all for that matter if you discount the pathetic scans made available on disc by the publisher themselves.
Issue 69 and 70 are now available thanks once again to Jason. Brill!!
One of our missing issues gets a release today. Thanks to one of our members who purchased and shipped them at his cost issue 129 is now available along with another fifteen issues that are awaiting scanning. Friggin' awesome!!
This issue was cut not straight so I scanned the pages as raw scans, ran Deskew on them then manually cropped each page. The things we do .... :-)
Time for another of GunyenTony's lovely donated issues to get the editing treatment with issue 102 now available.
Issue 69 is now available.
Another day, another pair of issues from Jason with 65 and 66 now available. Awesome!!
As you can tell from the Total PC Gaming and Computer Games: Strategy Plus releases lately, I received a load of magazines from our Stateside donator. Two boxes in fact so I have plenty of magazines to scan. I sent another donation off to him last week and we have another box lot of mags on the way. If we can get another $30 of donations I will send him another donation so we can yet another lot sent so if you are into PC gaming magazines please consider helping us get the necessary funds together to get them shipped.
On top of the above, we also have a shipment of missing Edge magazines coming from another site member which is fabulous as we work to get a full set of quality scans of this title preserved. Can't wait to receive and get working on scanning them as well.
In other news, I have ordered a scanner like the one Jason acquired recently. This should allow for faster processing on staple bound magazines like Dreamcast Magazine (Japan), CVG, GamesMaster, Sinclair User, Zzap!64 etc so looking forward to seeing if this works out. Fingers crossed. Busy time ahead !!!
Lastly, you may be aware that we are rapidly approaching the limit of my Mediafire account with only 40GB of free space left. When I reach the limit it will necessitate archiving content which will mean some content will no longer be available for download. I will let everyone know ahead of time, and most likely it will be content not showing up all that much in the download logs .... yes, I can see what everyone is downloading .... so if you see something you want in the list of content to be deleted best you grab it reasonably quickly. It's way too expensive to upgrade the plan to the next storage tier I am afraid so it is what it is.
Issue 13 is now available thanks to the donation of his print copy by J.Cameron. Brilliant!!
This issue was not cut square so I had to raw scan it, run deskew to straighten, and then crop the pages one by one. Time consuming but the resulting PDF was definitely worth the effort.....
*** UPDATE: Fixed the link. Man, that was stupid on my part!!!! ***
Two more of Jason's issues are now online. Grab issues 62 and 64 from the usual location :-)
